ABOUT
Contemporary Artist
“I was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and moved to New York in 1978. I began exhibiting my work in the East Village in the early 1980s, appearing in exhibitions alongside artists such as Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and Mark Kostabi. Since then, my work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, including in India, Japan, Korea, and Mexico. My paintings are held in numerous corporate and private collections and have appeared in major motion pictures, music videos, and magazines.
I have also illustrated numerous book covers for internationally published authors, including The Red House Mystery by A.A. Milne, High-Rise by J.G. Ballard, and A Can of Worms by Russell Greenan.
There are no digital prints, photographs, collage, airbrush, or projections involved in my work. Each painting takes between one and three months to complete, depending on scale.
Over the past decade, my practice has focused on themes of habitat loss, corporate culpability and greed, and the relentless cycles of consumerism and waste, often set against a backdrop of war and destruction. In my latest series, I paint a trompe-l’œil gilt frame directly onto the canvas, surrounding the subject to signal notions of “museum importance” and “historical value,” while simultaneously honoring and subverting traditional ideas of what deserves to be “framed” by history”.
